Alicia Epstein Korten
A philanthropic advisor and leader in the storytelling movement, ReNual CEO Alicia Korten has written two books including Change Philanthropy: Candid Stories of Foundations Maximizing Results through Social Justice and is contributing author to Wake Me Up When the Data Is Over: How Organizations are Using Stories to Drive Results. She conducts evaluations and supports strategic planning for grantmaking institutions, public agencies and socially responsible businesses. Alicia has written numerous reports to help clients such as the United Nations, Ford Foundation and others strengthen their grantmaking capacity. A Fulbright Scholar to Costa Rica, she enjoys leading retreats for clients on storytelling and leadership.

Before launching ReNual, Alicia worked with the Embera, Wounaan and Kuna Native Peoples* in Panama helping them establish an international precedent by becoming negotiators in a major loan by the Inter-American Development Bank, an intergovernmental agency that historically only negotiates with governments. The bank showcased the program as representing a new era of civil participation. The initiative informed the writing of Panama’s Environmental Law, which included important stipulations regarding the right of local communities to participate in the planning of projects that affect them.

*Indigenous organizations spearheading this effort included the Embera-Wounaan General Congress and the Madungandi General Congress.
